Yosemite Valley is the central launching pad for many outdoor activities in Yosemite National Park. Here you will be surrounded by ginormous granite rock formations including the famous El Capitan and Half Dome!
NPS.gov on Half Dome Permits in effect 2010 - you must obtain a permit to hike to the top of Half Dome on Fri/Sat/Sun and federal holidays when the cables are up.
