They are just a way to motivate you. The more workouts you do using this app, the more points you get. You can go "yay, I have reached a thousand points", so you can pat yourself on the shoulder for being so persistent and brave.
It really doesn't work for me, I have way better ways to motivate myself (like the high I get from working out), but if it works for others, then that's great!
