As far as weight loss goes, calories in, calories burned, don't really matter when you eat em, as far as I know.
I think to have the energy to workout as hard as you may want, you should eat.
To replenish and build muscle you gotta eat protein within 2hrs after. A recent study showed that you will process up to 20 grams of protein after a workout, the rest is burned as fuel.
