Depends on the person, average calorie intake, and what your trying to do huge muscle, lose weight, or tone.

It does depend on your current weight and workout regimen. But for someone who does less intense training, dropping 500 calories will drop your weight. You should never try counting 1000 calories unless you are obese. And the ACSM never recommends women going below 1200 calories for any reason. 1200 calories btw is very low. For me when I start my shred phase I'll be eating 4000 calories instead of 6000 calories. That's just an example of how training and a person's metabolic rate can vary differently person to person.
