Find some fitness websites to read. Getting fit isn't just physical, you gotta keep learning about stuff too. I like aworkoutroutine.com lately. Thats where i got my lifting routines. He explains very well why it's so important for a newbie to do simple, compound exercises.
You can substitute similar bodyweight exercises for these, if you don't have a gym, and it will still be great, although your progress will be difficult to track. You can see differences in a few months, though.
