I really hate cardio. I'd rather do strength training then cardio any day of the week but I know cardio is important for the heart and weight loss.

Any pointers on cardio? How can I work on my breathing?!? After a minute of jumping jacks I have to stop because of my throat burning and being out of breath.

I'm sure some of it is being of not being in shape but some of it has to be the way I breath.

Your breathing will find its own when you get healthier. Practice in thru the nose and out thru the mouth.

Yea your probably right. I've been told to do that before it seems so weird. Guess it will take time to get use to it.

I start with shorter bursts and longer rests. So 30sec exercise and 30sec rest, when thats easy 30sec exercise and 15sec rest...keep increasing slowly. Good luck, you will get there xx

jumping jacks are a pretty intensive cardio evem for someone who is fit. try lighter but longer cardio workouts outdoors. i love the cross trainer at my gym, i could go for ages without a timer. by the way i quit smoking 60 a day 8 weeks ago and now my breathing is a hell of a lot better. no wheezing anymore when walking fast.

That's great!! Congrats on quitting smoking! Ill have to try that. I have a dog so that's a real good reason to get outside more than I already do.

Start slow. A little cardio each day will help your lungs grow stronger. Maybe try jogging-- a couch-to-5K routine would be beneficial.

Pick up running to kick start your "dynamic" energy system which is essentially the aerobic system. It requires a lot of breathing and increases blood flow - increased blood flow means oxygen is being delivered to your cells which need the oxygen to release energy.

So basically, while jumping jacks are good, the most effective is running. Start with a 1-2k jog every other day and slowly build to 5-10k.

BTW - you need your cardio in order to de weights. After some point, doing just weights for a long time, will put your heart at risk!

Thanks so much for all the details!!! What do you think about biking? Right now I can't run before of knee issues. Would biking do just the same? I never knew that weight lifting could cause a heart issue. Great info.

When u build muscle you are increasing growth... Increased size means more blood - more blood means the more your heart has to work to keep your systolic and  dysystolic blood pressure. So all those guys with gigantic enormous muscles are asking for it (another topic).

Biking works as well - anything that taxes your breathing and is endurance related will do. If your knees are bad, then find out what about your knees is bad - joint? Cartilage?, etc... Most can be cured with supplements and physio. Look into something called Glucosamine Sulphate (if you're not allergic to shell fish).

Best of luck.... Remember... Knowledge is power and when it comes to bodybuilding or fitness, it's all knowledge and science.... Most people think it's a simple formula (that's true if you think your body is "simple"... To put in perspective, it takes anywhere from 6-10years to be a doctor and even 15 to be a specialist... And they continue learning - that should say something about the "simplicity" of  the human body.

I get most of my knowledge because I work in the pharma industry and my uncle is a PhD in Pathology, my dad a BSc. in Chemistry and my brother a BSc. in forensic psychology and anthropology... Me, just a computer engineer with a thirst for knowledge!

Yoga also helps you to train your breath for other things...
