Trouble with v holds

I don't seem to beable to get both legs off floor properly I can feel it in my back muscles rather then my stomach what can I do to improve this or instead of?

Do flutter kicks instead with your hands under your butt. Holds pull on my back also. Flutter kicks are pain free

I can do it with my hands under my bum just can't do it by side or behind head with v crunches etc I didn't know if it was cheating putting them under bum as gives so leverage lol

Yes I have 3 children, I just get annoyed when I can't do something I will give these ago see how I get on, I need to strengthen my core so been concentrating on abs legs and butt workouts planks etc
