Don't mind if I chime in, I agree with Bryan... A less complicated way of doing what Bryan is saying and to increase speed is to do a warmup jog for 1 minute and begin a set of 30-second sprints (really pushing yourself), and walking for one minute. Do that for eight sets. When that gets easy (about a month or so) start sprinting for 60 seconds and then walk for 120 seconds, and do 8 sets... Really works!

Keep at it and it will get better. I can run four miles in 25 minutes.
