Any advice on protein shakes?

I'm just starting to workout and eat healthy my mom suggested protein shakes but I have no idea when to have one or what to put in them

What are your goals? You may not need protein shakes.

Well when I first started using the protein/meal replacement shakes that I was on before I lost 43 lbs in 90 days. But unfortunately I stopped them along with not eating healthy as I should and gained to back do here I am again ready to take it off but this time for good! Oh btw I went from a size 20 to a 14 :)
