Anyone getting fit despite an injury or because of an injury?

Hey, I've got a small
spine injury, used to weight lift when I was younger and I have HbSS... Any tips on working out and improving core strength without doing anymore damage?

I have asked my doctor, but he's not really sure, only says swimming and to strengthen my core. So I'm trying Pilate's, yoga and weights as I can't swim in winter... But I'm not getting much results so want to know other ppls experiences and opinions
