Shin splints

Hey yall,

I started running last spring and was training for a 10k this month, but then I ended up with shin splints so bad I could barely walk and felt them through most of the day. Ive bought new support shoes and have been resting, but does anyone know any good exercises to do or stretches to prevent them? Ive been doing low impact cardio but I really miss running. Also how long are you supposed to rest before running again?
