Knee Pain

I am 5ft 10 and weigh 82Kg. Few months back I was having this nagging Knee pain. When consulted the doctors asked me to stop running, avoid climbing steps and doing Squats. He also suggested I do some VMO strengthning exercies. I tried searching the net but couldnt find any with correct procedures explained.

Some one please help me out if you have anything to strengthen the Knees.
