Getting knee pain more often and not sure why? Usually after squats or a spell in the gym. Don't know if its down to the exercise or pms ??

while doing squats you need to be very carefull ...if the pain is increasing ..i suggest you to see doctor ...

You are not doing squats correctly. Doing a squat normal without correct form puts the strain directly on your knees. When doing a squat you need to keep your back straight and stick your but out

And try to do them and lift your toes. Like what was mentioned, if your butt is back far enough it'll take a lot of pressure off the knees.

Squats shud be done with proper posture and  execution as said by others here.. If knee pain occurs it maybe sprain(ligament) or strain(tendon) damage. It could be relieved by  Resting the knee
Cold compress 3x a day for the first 24hrs
Warm compress 3x a day after 24hrs if injury
Elavation of knee
