How can you differentiate between workouts that tone you up and workouts that build muscles?

Toning generally is high volume high intensity, if your using weight use low weight
Muscle building you predominantly need to use weights, for size gains it needs to be high weight low repetitions eg 5 sets of 5 reps
Dont differentiate,just go hard every training,every round one more rep,push the limits,cuz muscle and body doesnt undersyand numbers 5,7,10 etc. Kill the muscle with weights and you will see muscle mass! If you wanna to tone you up,go hard also,reduce rest between rounds,destroy yourself for 30-40 min,rock some 20 min cardio after that,2-3 times per week,mixed with your standard program...and you ll become machine my friend! But its not easy...condition is keyword ;)
