Unfortunatelly I have a meniscus problem and such activities as squats and lunges are def not mine.

Hmm can you do leg lifts of any kind while lying down, I think they are much better at toning thighs and glutes than doing squats anyway. Squats just give you football thighs more than they tone your glutes.
I love doing squats.. Having said that, I have just had keyhole surgery on my meniscus and cartilage so for a few months I couldn't do any leg exercises. To get strength back I got given a good range of exercises, including squats, but do them on a chair and not too many. Definitely stay away from lunges lol
Leg raises will do a lot around that area, plus they will work your abs too. Biking is very good too.
