You can lose calories, but that doesn't mean you will lose weight. To lose a pound you have to basically burn 3500 calories. People recommend 250 less food a day and 250 calories burned from exercise a day x5 will allow you to lose 3500 calories which = 1 pound.

Cals is a messure of food your body stores via fat, carbs. Fat burn is a messure of extra cals being burned.
So lets say you wake up and right away workout doing cardio, your body still is still able to burn cals, youll just be going into a deficiency, so if you burn 250 cals in the morning your body will be at a -250cal when you eat your body will then be brought back into a posstive state. Some people do this to burn fat for the fact of the body having to tap into resevered energy sorcese.
So cals are a messure of how much work your doing fat burn is how low your intake is leading to stored fat being used as a energy.
