But you don't have to dread it.

Grab a kettlebell and do 200/300 swings every day from now until the New Year.

You don't have to do them all at once. You can do 100 in the morning, 100 at lunch, 100 in the evening. It should take you around 5/10 minutes each time. Take rests as needed.

You'll get some good cardio, and use some of those extra calories you ate to build some muscle.

I may start low, with 20-lb bell; maybe 25, since I was off all weights, recovering, for like 4 MONTHS.

That's totally fine. You can ease yourself into it, even start with less reps. :)
