Don't go on a diet. Make a lifestyle change.
First off. Track your calories, know exactly what you're putting in your body. It can be startling.
You need to burn more calories then you eat to lose weight. A simple calorie counting app can help you with this. I use the myfitnesspal app. Healthy weight loss is 1 to 2 pounds a week.
Rule of thumb, eat whole foods most of the time. Lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, grains. Pay attention to how different foods make you feel. The occasional plate of nachos isn't going to completely derail your efforts, but you may feel bloated and gross afterward.

Keep healthy snacks in the house. I love berries, coconut yogurt, and granola (just be wary of the calories in granola).Don't keep triggering foods in the house. If there's chips or cookies in the house, I'm going to eat them. So I don't buy them.
If you're super busy like me buy healthy convenance foods. Bagged salad, precut fruits vegetables and proteins, microwavable grains.
I also replace cooking with olive oil or margarine with organic cooking spay.
