Interestingly, needing to work is one of the biggest differences between professional and amateur sportspeople.
The athletes (professionals) spend the work hours training and the rest of the time is recovery which allows for better training adaptation than the amateur can generally get.
To compensate, immediately after training you need to engage in some active recovery to stimulate your Parasympathetic Nervous System ( your recovery system ).
Sleep is not rest or recovery unless you have actually relaxed prior to going to bed. Don't confuse exhausted with resting or tired. It isn't.
Chat with friends, have a laugh, do stuff that makes you smile. Stuff that you do not have to concentrate to do.
Hope that helps :)
