Days off for muscle gain?

I'm trying to gain muscle and tighten skin in some areas. I read that you need to take a good amount of days off in order for the muscle to recover and build. So, how do you do it? I was thinking about working certain muscle groups twice a week by alternating while still doing cardio. Does that sounds right?
