How to get abs?

I've had some pretty serious abdominal surgeries from years past. I'm wondering if there are any abs workouts I can do that don't hurt my gut. And will help me lose the love handles.

The challenge to "get abs" is that you already have abs, but you have to lose the fat covering them up. Working your core is good for many reasons, but not for losing fat, so core exercises are actually not all that helpful in getting abs.

This is good news for you, since you seem worried about working your ab muscles directly anyway.

We can't choose where our body loses fat, and the midsection is usually the last place to go. We just have to lose fat until we get what we want.

The only way to lose fat is through a caloric deficit. This means you burn more than you eat. You can do this by eating less, burning more, or usually both.

The biggest difference in almost all weight loss programs comes from adjusting what you eat. Eat more fruits and vegetables, eat more lean protein, cut out almost all foods with added sugar. Drink more water, cut out any beverages with any calories. Cut your carbs a bit, try for more whole grains.

Cardio burns more calories, weight training really helps with body composition though(muscle to fat ratio), abs exercises do little for calories or body composition, but they are good for stamina, spinal stability and injury prevention, and posture.

Eat healthy, not too much, work out more, and that's how to lose fat. Do it long enough to see the results reach your belly. It's that simple.
