Need some advice

Im 5'8 170 lbs. Iv gained about15 pounds over the last 2 and a half years. Have kids does that lol anyway im finaly getting back into a steady running routine but i dont really want to lose the weight. Id like to keep it for muscle. Any thoughts on how to do that with increasing mileage?

Make sure you lift weights and eat about 1 gram of protein per pound of the bodyweight you wANT to be

Is that just on lifting days?

That should be consistent because you body is still producing muscle when you're not lifting.

Is it the same getting protein out of some kind of shake as it is eating it?

Food is always the best but shakes are a good way to add low.calorie lean protein to your diet. A shake after a workout of any kind is good for recovery. Diet is half the battle
