I find that I get the best workouts on an empty stomach. I'll drink a large cup of black coffee and hit the weights. I wake up at 4:30am, drink a large cup of coffee, and hit the gym at 5am. But everyone is different, so I would suggest you run some split tests. Try one day on empty, one day with pre-workout shake, one day with a pre-workout snack, etc. See what works best for you.
