Can anyone give me an easy diet to start off with and some work out suggestions for the core with weights? I'm trying to gain abs before the end of this year.

Stephen, getting abs is about low bodyfat and it isn't all that easy:-(. You need to combine a good diet and exercise with weights to create a calorie deficit and maintain your muscle in the process. Start with 500 calories below maintenance and monitor your progress while reducing calories when necessary. Good Luck.
