What to have before going for an intense workout session?

The only time I get for the gym is immediately after work and I find myself really low with energy level majorly due to having the last meal during lunch i.e. 6 hrs before. How to get an energy hit at this time?

Protein. Electrolytes, and possibly carbohydrates. Just include a cool down with the end of your workouts to help balance it all out.
