About: Founded in 1961 on Stratton Mountain near Manchester Center, Vermont, USA, Stratton Mountain Resort offers 92 trails, 15 lifts and a 2003 feet vertical drop for skiing and snowboarding. It is also one of the few eastern ski resorts with its own base village. Once offering an Austrian-themed ski village and the Stratton Mountain Boys, a traditional Austrian folk band, Stratton has been through a number of changes since its 1994 acquisition by Intrawest. The resort includes shopping outlets, dining, slopeside condoniniums and homes. Stratton features five terrain parks, including a notable half-pipe, which is the annual site of the U.S. Open Snowboard Championships. Jake Burton Carpenter, a resident of Londonderry, Vermont, invented and tested the "snurfer", better known as the snowboard at Stratton. He went on to found Burton Snowboards. For advanced skiing, the Kidderbrook area which is in the Sun Bowl is known for its steeps. Other options offering steep terrain from the summit are the Polar Bear, the Grizzly Bear and Upper Tamarack. For those looking for bumps, big mogul fields can be found on World Cup, Stevik and, on the Sun Bowl side, on Downdraft. After a snow dump, Lift Line and/or Upper/Lower Goose are frequently left ungroomed which makes for some excellent natural moguls. Stratton predominately consists of intermediates runs. Because of the excellent grooming, many of the black runs are accessible to intermediate skiers. In short, this is a great mountain for intermediate skiers. For beginners, there are plently of long runs to cruise on. Beginners can ski trails originating at the summit. For those just beginning to ski there is a large learning area offering 10 trails and its own lift. Stratton is known for its terrain parks. It has consistently been ranked as the #1 Resort for Terrain Parks in North America. Stratton has four 6 person detachable chairlifts, including the first one to be installed in the East. In addition, it has the only gondola in Southern New England. Stratton also has a golfschool and 27-hole course.
