California, United States
Mount Ritter is located in the Sierra Nevada of the state of California, in the southwestern United States. It is made of a strikingly dark rock, and is quite prominent due to its height and isolation (30 miles). It is in the middle of the Ritter Range, which include Banner Peak and the Minarets.
The mountain is named for Carl Ritter, who had been a teacher of Josiah Whitney when he was a student in Berlin in the 1840s.
