Challenges / 10 Miles a Week-Walk/Run/or Hike Challenge

Weather better today. Had cloud cover that brought the temp down by abt 5C. Wet for a 2.5 miles walk in the morning and  a 6 mile run in the evening. Felt good. That bring the total to 8 miles for week3. Hope I do 20+ miles this week with hopefully improving weather but humidity is killing-something to continue cribbing abt i guess.

Challenges / 10 Miles a Week-Walk/Run/or Hike Challenge

Completed 4.31 miles yesterday. Had done 7.02 on 4th and completed a mile long walk. This brings the total to 12 miles for this week. One more day to go. With extreme heat and humidity, completing even a 2 mile slow jog is becoming extremely difficult. But its a challenge and I like challenges. Will report later if I succeeded.

09 Jun
yeah..who doesnt like a challange! but still, try to avoid the max heat houres of the day.
09 Jun
Yes. Thats why i go in evening after sunset. I get to run more in a much less heat - abt 3 degrees less.
09 Jun
Wow! Your determined! Good to know you run in the evening with all that heat! Good work!
09 Jun
Managed 5 miles run and a mile long walk. 18 miles for this week. Improvement of 8 miles over last week. Thanks for all the encouragement from you folks that made this possible.:-)

Motivation & Support / Help me give up smoking.

Only way it worked for me is to turn cold turkey.  Sorry for the long reply but I could not help but share my experience as I thought you might be able to relate better.

The moment I determined to myself that I WON'T BE A SLAVE TO THIS IDIOTIC THING, I got inner courage to fight my urge to go back to lighting another one. Until such time I felt that I can fight this only by becoming strong in mind, I always gave some excuse to myself or came up with some unworkable strategy  and would light up a cigarette. Along side I took up running as a hobby - gave me a good insight on my "health"! The more I ran, the less I felt the urge to smoke and gradually in about 3 weeks. The urge to smoke died by itself.

I also gave myself a challenge of 3 - i e challenge myself not to smoke for 3 hours, then extended that challeneg to 3 consecutive 3 hours and then 3 days, then 3 weeks and then 3 months, 3 years so on...

One point of caution : You will have a strong urge to share your victory over yourself immediately but please DON'T FALL IN THAT TRAP.  This makes you over-confident and would make you try smoking again as you will feel that you have the ability to fight the urge to smoke. But believe me its not - if you give up and fall for this trap, you will end up feeling very miserable. Dont talk abt your victory till 3 years without smoking.  Yes some friends/family members may remark that they dont see you smoking - to that you may just nod and agree without getting into deep clarification of your fight and how long its been since you've smoked etc..JUsT DONT DO IT.

Dont slacken on your running - no matter how slow you are or how hard you breath, continue to challeneg yourself and run everyday. Some days your body will scream for rest but dont listen to it.... i've noticed that the days you dont run, you wl like going back to smoking again - compensate the body's requirement of adrenaline (or whatever harmone it is) rush by running or eworking out in a gym.

Also avoid and stay away from NEGATIVE PEOPLE.

Best of luck and hope you start this fight/challenge right away - remember what you can start tomorrow can be started right away too. Moreover if you really want to fight this why not now?

Challenges / 10 Miles a Week-Walk/Run/or Hike Challenge

Yesterday was rest day for me.

I began the week's challenge today. Completed 7.02 run and mile long walk back home. adds up to 8 miles.

Horribly hot: 40 degrees C and humid 45%. An hr gone by... have been sweating like crazy. Sitting on news papers at home and drinking water endlessly. This week hope to do more than 10 miles.

04 Jun

04 Jun

05 Jun

Challenges / 10 Miles a Week-Walk/Run/or Hike Challenge

I couldnot run the entire week - i was busy and it was very hot (43 degrees C or 110 degrees F). Last of couple of days (fri and sat) the weather improved 40 C /104 F. So i finally ran determined to complete 10miles for the week( 10.02 miles in 1:51:57). I was slow but I did it. Feeling good for having achieved but now I got to b consistent.

03 Jun
Be careful in that heat! Stay hydrated and so glad u got in the ten. :-)
03 Jun
Thank you Austen. Yeah, hydration is important. Will take care.
03 Jun
Austen is right! Drink Water! That is hot!!! Great job on your miles!
03 Jun
Thank you Sierra. I take gatorade. I was drenched after the run - leaving puddles wherever i went. Later compensated with drinking lot of water.
03 Jun
Wow, hot & humid weather... Do you live in south Asia or mid East? Well done, btw!

Feedback / Swimming

Hello Joshua,

Thanks for the tips. Found all the three websites with a wealth of knowledge stored therein. I am starting with the beginners drills/workouts and I must say it is extremely helpful. Thank you so much for your help and showing the direction.

Best regards,

Sanjay

Stress & Relaxation / ugh I can't sleep

Switch to morning workouts instead of late evening ones. If morning is not possible, make sure there's a gap of at least 2 hours before you hit the sack after dinner. Which means if sleeping time is 10 PM have dinner by 8 PM and complete workout by 1915 hrs or 7:15PM latest.

Welcome Wagon / Running

For learning correct form for running, you can read from chi running - book and videos by danny dreyer (checkout some videos and workouts in youtube or u can purchase his book). It helped me a lot in improving my speed without injury or exhaustion. Then there are scores of workoits focusing on core strength. You can do these to improve balance and gain speed in your learning process. One precaustion though - dont run at low inensity for 30 minutes or under that time as it can stunt your height (medically proven).

Enjoy your runs - it helps me reach my zone.

Lol I'm 5'3 and 28 I think my growth was stunned a long time ago. I've just never been good at running. I get winded and exhausted very quick and never took the time to figure out why. I'm not over weight or anything just out of shape lol. But I figured there had to be something more to just running you know? Pace, form ect.

Challenges / 10 Miles a Week-Walk/Run/or Hike Challenge

Thought I will do more than 10 miles last week but could not. Started various workouts for the first time after many years. In my enthusiasm didn't realize that I was over doing it. Ended up with severe body ache that forced me to rest for two days. Could not run the planned 10 mileson Sunday. Ended the week with 7 miles.

Today I'm feeling better and have already commenced my workout but in moderation :) This week I will surely complete this challenge and every week after that.

20 May
Your enthusiasm is impressive! I am glad your on this challenge!
20 May
1st tryout doesnt count..u will do great in no time!!

Feedback / Swimming

Thank you so much. I'd really appreciate that. Yes I do have access to the gym but I'm weary of using it. If its essential and helps improve swimming, I'll do it. I must clarify that I'm just a beginner as a swimmer. Just abt a week old - I'm able to float and do breast stroke without breathing. I'm abt to learn breathing techniques. Thank you once again.

Challenges / 10 Miles a Week-Walk/Run/or Hike Challenge

Wow! Thanks for clarifying. Initially I thought it is the average of the weekly run which has to be 10 miles but now its clear that it is the aggregate of the weekly run.  Also thanks for  the follow. You're the first one on this network. It feels good to be welcomed this way.

You can always start at any day that suits you best, and post your miles in the forum afterwards. Am I right, Sierra?

Challenges / 10 Miles a Week-Walk/Run/or Hike Challenge

I'm taking this challenge. I'm currently averaging 7 miles a week with 2 - 3 runs per week. 10 miles would mean that I have to increase my daily distances.

How do I post my mileage? I use nike+ running app. Is there a way to linkup that activity in this app? I also use Garmin watch - either of the two can be linked up if you can tell me how.

Thanks

16 May
Hi Sanjay.. Good to have you in the challenge :-) unfortunately you have to log your mileage manually, since neither Nike+ app or Garmin watch can be connected to Skimble at the moment. Enjoy the challenge & keep us posted!
16 May
Sounds like you would do well with this challenge! Welcome!
18 May
Great challenge start my 10 miles run today.
